Praia do Camilo beach, Algarve, Portogallo

Don’t be afraid! No one will steal or rob your tent.

Alongside the Albanian Riviera, thousands of tourists choose to camp and not to spend money by renting an apartment or book a hotel room. Why spend your vacations sleeping in a hotel room? There is a long chain of camping tents in many beaches in the Albanian Riviera.

Your children will soon get familiar with Albanian children. Our mothers always taught us to welcome others in the game and treat them as if they were our siblings. This way, you will find time for yourself and your partner to have fun and enjoy the beach / sun.
Reduce costsFinding a way to reduce costs during vacations is very important since it gives you the opportunity to buy more things for yourself and spend on entertaining your family. Spending vacations in a tent or a camping van, is more cheap and entertaining than living in a hotel room.

Fresh air – nature – sun!The fresh air of an unspoiled coastline combined with the freshness of trees and green vegetation that borders the sand of our beaches will add ten more years to your longevity for sure. Osumi, friendship, and off-roading: rafting in Albania (I)

Back I was, into one of the few countries trapped inside my traveller’s heart. Excitement was plummeting, yet I could not envisage the depths and beauty of our adventure to follow. Not yet.
There is an urban legend adhered to by all water/whitewater addicts – it deals with the River God and with the search for it. A search for your perfect river that could take you across continents, fighting your limits, exploring foam and colours. As far as water is concerned, I’m voting for turquoise!
We’d already gotten close and into the mood of it all singing in the car on our way to the start point, with Zamo – the President of the Albanian Rafting Federation and the owner of Albania Rafting Group – having already made us feel at home, right from the first stop registered because Andra was feeling a bit hungry.

The heat was pounding, but curiosity was stronger. Another stop followed, where we could look down at the river from the highest viewing point: Osumi was flowing silently – turquoise, narrow, perfect! I couldn’t get enough, really! By the time we reached our departure point, I was very-very eager to get into the water – and it was not only to escape the dizzying heat. Hmmm, Andra and Iulia were eager, too, I could feel that, Marcel would accompany us by kayak.
The water level was low and they were about to close the season – we were actually about to close it –, as Zamo explained. I was also happy because I had discovered that our skipper, charming and joyful Rati, and I were born on the same day! This was a sign and I took it as such.
We started to paddle and to enjoy the shade, with Rati explaining the parts of the river that could become tricky when the water level was high. [I’ve seen pictures with that turquoise colour gone in times of heavy rains; in exchange, well, you’ve got some pretty huge waves, with grade 2 (as witnessed by us) turning quickly into grade 4+/5.] In a way, it is very clear why: the canyon takes you down on a very narrow path and all that water must fit in there and literally carve its way down.
Courtesy of Albania Rafting Group
The low-level ride allowed for a better look around – and marvel we did! High steep whitish rocks framing the azure dream, with birds flying freely amongst the vegetation ushering its way into the picture. For a moment, I thought of Rio Azul in Mexico and my mind could only list South/Central American waterways to hold as much lushness as Osumi. A true wonder! ...completed by the glorious waterfalls under which I felt simply happy. A highly-ranked candidate as the River God, huh?
Courtesy of Albania Rafting Group
As we exited the canyon, I felt the urge to go back, to ride it again, to sense it yet another time! Leaving it behind and heading into the mountains enhanced that feeling. At first. The spectacular views that followed made my first trip into the Albanian mountains, back in 2009, fade, as I kept repeating ‘Your country is extraordinary; I have travelled far and wide but this... this leaves me breathless!’to Zamo. As night caught us by surprise still high on the mountain roads, tiredness started to show. However, when we reached Përmet, we wanted to hang out some more and have dinner. With our friends. It was special, with nut marmalade, ice cream, and the most memorable sweets of our trip filling the table and marking the end of the most beautiful day of our trip.
Albanian hospitality, friendship, and beauty filled our hearts and souls! Forever.    http://mychessboardmygame.blogspot.ro/2015/07/osumi-friendship-and-off-roading.html?m=1

Take Five: Whether your ideal trip includes the coast, the mountains, history or food, these five Albanian highlights have something for everyone.

Take Five: Albania
Albania, located on the Balkan Peninsula in Southeastern Europe, is a little country with a lot to offer. Beaches stretch across its western Adriatic coast. A string of rugged mountains—perfect for hiking and climbing—are scattered across its landscape. There’s also the newly renovated culture heritage sites, fresh and locally grown cuisine, cosmopolitan cities and rustic villages. And all of this at just a fraction of what it costs to vacation in other European locales … a beer, for instance, costs about 250 Lek, or about two dollars.
But perhaps Albania’s most exciting quality: it is still off most travelers’ radars. For tourists lucky enough to make the quick hop from Italy or Croatia to explore this ancient culture mixed with modern nightlife, gastronomy and conveniences, the beauty and traditions of a country not yet plagued with overcrowded beaches, hiking trails and natural landmarks are ready to be discovered. Whether your ideal trip includes the coast, the mountains, history or food, these five Albanian highlights have something for everyone.
1) The Southern Coastal City of Saranda
Saranda, at the southern end of the country and just across the channel from the Greek island of Corfu, is one of Albania’s best coastal cities. The beaches are all postcard worthy, the water is crystal clear, and the food is so fresh you’ll often see the boat deliver the ingredients you eat each night.
Saranda is surrounded by many remote seaside secrets, but when you’ve had your fill of the Adriatic take a short bus ride to the Blue Eye, a freshwater spring in a deep karst pool that feeds the Bistrice River. After a day of sun, there are plenty of clubs and bars to explore, but one of the favorite local activities is going xhiro, or promenading along the beach in the evening with family and friends.
2) Butrint National Park
butrint.jpg

Rich in biodiversity and history, the UNESCO-protected site of Butrint is an ancient city once controlled by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Venetians. Hike to the castle (entrance: $4), where the Albanian flag is perched, and look over the park’s 36 square miles. Enjoy the lagoon, explore the amphitheater, or just relax in nature. To make the most of your experience, book a day trip with Our Own Expeditions, an outfitter specializing in Albanian history and culture.
3) The Lakeside Village of Tushemisht
Tushemisht, which sits on the shores of Lake Ohrid and next to the Macedonian border, is the location of one of Albania’s most iconic films: Zonja nga Qyteti or The Madam from the City in which a woman is forced to leave the city for the village. In the end, of course, she falls in love with the community’s charm and kindness. The village has same effect on foreign visitors and you’ll instantly feel it with the small shops selling traditional clothes and other items.
Tushemisht is also famous for its mountain-water fountains, nearby beach and extraordinary food grown within steps of the restaurants that serve specialties like a lake trout called koran. It is rumored that even the Queen of England has tasted it. After dining, take a walk to Volo Reka, also called Drilon. This protected forest and lagoon area is a great spot to explore and take Venetian-esque boat rides (about $2 an hour).
4) The Capital of Tirana
tirana.jpg
Photo: Flickr/Lassi Kurkijärvi
Albania’s capital is also the country’s most cosmopolitan city. A visit to the National Museum as well as the National Gallery of Art will help to shed light on the country’s complicated history, which includes the interweaving of Illyrian, Ottoman and communist culture. Both of these are located in Tirana’s center: Skenderbeg Square, which is named after the most famous Albanian hero.
Tirana’s restaurants serve both local and international cuisine, all with fresh ingredients from the surrounding villages. A local favorite is Zgara Korcare, which serves traditional Albanian grilled meats and vegetables. For nightlife, head to theBlloku area, which has become the go-to spot for coffee, a cocktail or late-night dancing.
5) The Valbona Valley in the Albanian Alps
komani.jpg
Photo: Flickr/megan.greeley
The Valley of Valbona sits in the Albanian Alps in the northern quarter of the country and is the perfect adventure for hikers. A newly established ferry ride on the nearby Komani Lake allows tourists to experience the steep mountains and magnificent views firsthand. The Northern Albanian Highlanders are known throughout the region for their hospitality. Locals are more than willing to help with any navigation needs, so don’t stress out if you speak little to no Albanian.
